What we do

Scouting, on and off the water

We’re a volunteer-run Sea Scout group based on the Swan River at Mosman Park and Peppermint Grove. We welcome boys and girls aged 8 to 15 from across Perth’s western suburbs and beyond. Through the Scout Method, young people learn by doing — outdoors, on the river and alongside their friends.

Learn to Sail

Sailing, paddling and — as they grow — power boat driving. Skills built on technique, not strength.

Skills and confidence

Through the Scout Patrol System, young people take on responsibility, set their own goals and help lead the group.

Time outdoors

Camps, the river, the bush and local community activities, most Saturdays during the school term.

Welcoming to all

Boys and girls from age 8 are welcome, from all backgrounds and abilities.

What makes us different

What are Sea Scouts?

“Sea Scouts” reflects where we are and what we do: water-based adventure on the Swan River, alongside all the land-based Scouting you'd expect. Members learn sailing and paddling, and as they get older, power boat driving.

Sailing is a brilliant activity for kids — it rewards technique over strength, builds teamwork and leadership, and offers a real sense of freedom and independence once it's mastered. We have a fleet of sail boats and power boats to support it all.

Join our team — and have fun doing it

Scout groups are run by volunteers. Lending your time is a great way to give back, learn new skills, get outdoors and meet wonderful people. Everyone has a skill that can contribute — including learning to drive a power boat or sail.

01

Leaders of Youth

Cub and Scout Leaders mentor and inspire our young people and deliver the youth program. Leaders receive ongoing training and access to free or discounted accreditation in areas like First Aid, Recreation and Business.

02

Adult Helpers

Commit to attending meetings and activities regularly to assist with the hands-on side of Scouting, without becoming a Leader. Helpers also access training and play an important part in our group.

03

Committee Members

Meet regularly to oversee the financial and management side of the group, working with the Group Leader and drawing on your own professional and personal experience.

Every skill is welcome:

Camping & outdoors Accounting Gardening Carpentry Promotion Fundraising Sewing Sailing & power boats

We ask that parents of youth members help at a regular session on a simple alphabetical roster, supporting the leaders to deliver each session.

About Us

A proud history on the Swan

Our story is shared by generations of local families. If you'd like to share your memories — or help document our history for the future — we'd love to hear from you.

1911

The No.9 Troop forms, meeting at the Waterhouse home on Irvine Street, near the Esplanade in Peppermint Grove.

1929

A vessel is acquired from the Royal Australian Navy and moored in Freshwater Bay — Saturday afternoons mean rowing and sailing on the river.

Post-war

Now known as Sea Scouts, the group builds its own premises and later settles on the banks of the Swan, beside the Royal Freshwater Bay Yacht Club.

1959

The Mosman Park RSL helps establish a purpose-built hall, with Scouting flourishing alongside the Sea Scouts.

Today

The group has regained the old Mosman Park Scout Hall on Wellington Street, with plans to bring Scouting to the community for many years to come.

Our Vision

Committed to enriching the lives of youth

Scouting is about learning by doing. A Scout learns from their peers, gives it a go, and once they've mastered it, teaches a younger Scout. Under the Patrol System the young people run their own structure, elect their leaders, and define their goals.

“We're here to give kids the support they need to become the leaders of the future — and the chance to see just how far they can go.”

Our leaders facilitate adventurous activities that help young people identify their strengths, learn about themselves, and build confidence and character that lasts a lifetime.

FAQ & Fees

Everything you need to know

Unsure how to join or how it all works? Here are the questions we're asked most.

Start right away! Scouting runs across all four seasons and children are welcome to join during any school term. Begin your Scouting journey tomorrow or next week — we'll be ready when you are.
The term Sea Scouts primarily identifies our location and the water-based activities on offer, alongside land-based Scouting. Members learn sailing and paddling, and as they get older, power boat driving. Sailing is a great outdoor activity for kids because it relies on technique rather than physical strength, teaches teamwork and leadership, and offers freedom and independence once mastered. We have a range of sail boats and power boats to support our activities.
We welcome both boys and girls from the age of 8. Our Cubs section is for 8 to 10 year olds, and our Scout section caters for 11 to 15 year olds. Adults and all members of the community are welcome too. You're invited to come along to two free ‘come and try’ sessions before joining.
The uniform is a polo or button-up shirt for each section with navy blue shorts or pants. Youth members wear the uniform shirt and scarf to sessions each week; shorts or pants are only needed for formal activities such as Anzac Day parades. Shirts, hats and badges are available from Scoutshop Australia — we keep a stock of shirts and hats, and supply our group's unique scarf on a child's official investiture. Pants or shorts can be bought from any store.
Membership has two parts. 1) The Mosman Bay Sea Scouts Group Fee covers insurance, hall and vessel running costs, equipment, badges, scarves and activity materials — charged at the start of the year, or payable per term. 2) The Scouts WA Annual Membership Fee covers personal and public liability insurance and contributes to training, facilities and resources, paid annually on your registration date. See the breakdown on the right. We offer a discount for siblings and for children whose parents become a leader.
